Excellent book in creative verse that tells the story of an athletic girl with a chronic illness. To Aniana, swimming feels like joy. Her mom’s traumatic fear of water becomes an obstacle to her desire to be on the swim team but her dad lets her sneak. Suddenly, Aniana’s body swells up painfully for no clear reason. What is going on? Is this divine punishment for lying to her mom?

Yeah, ooof. Religion, and specifically Christianity, in this mother character, certainly causes a lot of family dysfunction and trauma. Some reviews I've already seen criticize the book for not representing their religion in their idealized understanding of it. Haha! Religions plague humanity, causing more death and trauma for children than practically anything else in human existence.
