This book takes the young reader through a time in Italy long ago, when families, farms and communities were all connected.

On page 35, this book is meandering around, with really no direction as I can see it. I'm having a hard time wanting to finish it because it's so slow.

Right at the end, a letter comes from the father and it looks like the mother, Nino and the grandfather will be joining him in the USA. Still no reason has been given why the father ended up immigrating to the States and I continue to be left with a feeling of giving up a type of rural paradise (and one where even art and famous artists are honoured and feted) for a rather uncertain future in America.

What a lovely and poetic story!! Informative, gentle and Nino's artistic nature is certainly shown, often in direct contrast to the more mundane (but equally endearing) nature of his friend Julio, whop seems to always be hungry and who is musical. I love the gentle and loving family and neighbourhood ties depicted and that early 20th century rural Italian life is shown, perhaps a bit nostalgically and positively.
