Status Updates From Bitter and Sweet

I'm about a third of the way through, and I'm having trouble keeping the characters straight. Once again, too many viewpoints, two timelines. Is that now a requirement for general fiction books? I hope it's a trend that soon turns back to one viewpoint. Clearly noted flashbacks not in italics would be OK. Did this start with "The Winter Sea"?
