“خانه سرباز” تا اینجا یکی از بهترین داستانها بوده. همینگوی به خوبی تونست روایتگر احساسات و حالات مختلف یک جوان با تروماهای ازاردهنده باشه؛ از طرفی وجود روحیه حمایتگری در عین آسیب‌دیدگی هم از نزدیکی عمیق همینگوی به “سرباز” هست.

He stood behind his desk in the far end of the dim room. The wife liked him. She liked the deadly serious way he received any complaints. She liked his dignity. She liked the way he wanted to serve her. She liked the way he felt about being a hotel-keeper. She liked his old, heavy face and big hands.

Just then the woman cried out. “Oh, Daddy, can’t you give her something to make her stop screaming?” asked Nick. “No. I haven’t any anæsthetic,” his father said. “But her screams are not important. I don’t hear them because they are not important.

How every one he had slept with had only made him miss her more. How what she had done could never matter since he knew he could not cure himself of loving her.
