some of this is good, and I'm enjoying it in bits and pieces, but the overall impression is a book that's still in the drafting phase.

It's fascinating to see an incredible fiction writer write such self-conscious non-fiction. We all have to go through our "hello everyone, I am a writer; here I am, writing a book!" phase, but it's so interesting to see someone do it in what I think is like his tenth book.
