This author does not know how to tell a story. There’re stories here. She’s just too fixated on a thesis for every chapter, and it is inexpertly asserted and defended. The result is an anachronistic recounting of people doing this and that, sometimes why, sometimes what happened next, and then wipe the slate and start again in the next chapter. Dammit I’m mad

It seems the early colonists to Virginia and the Chesapeake were the dregs of humanity. They were the worst. Their animal husbandry was so negligent, they’d make modern puppy mill trailer park people look like they’re at least doing something. Just two of a kind.

Very frustrated. It’s a deluge of facts and piecemeal stories that testifies to being poorly organized and marshalled. Who edited this book? Why weren’t they more constructive? Why did they embargo the use of tables, which would have helped put timelines to things and make a point when lists and dates and numbers were part of it? Fuckin snoozefest
