Nearing the end of his life of psychological investigation but far from writing the last word on alchemy, this treatise about the enigmatic figure of Mercurius goes into great depth. One could imagine one of Jung’s contemporaries scoff, just as many do now at this effort and in the same breath claim the stock market is more a substantial field of study even though it is as artificial a theory as this mythical lore.

Glad that Jung found so much to say about Zosimos and Paracelsus as I must admit reading these two chapters back-to-back made both alchemical authors elucidate similarly. Probably an occupational hazard of such study in esoterica that it makes one seems like they know more than is commonly understood about mystical processes, extending to people like me writing about Jung’s interpretation of Dorn inquiring into …

Lingering on what might be the last book in the Collected Works exclusively to analyze alchemical imagery, a process begun seven years ago when I first read Psychology and Alchemy, perhaps it is time to move on from the arcane riddles Jung deciphers? A world that I am reluctant to leave as he is just getting into the Alan Watts territory of Taoism. But water-damaged mandalas fused together halts my progress.
