Status Updates From The Roads Chosen

Third time around; there's more in here for me...

I'll read this again; I'm tempted by the reviews I've read.

He's now fed and watered. Phew, it was no guarantee a few pages back.

Reading this has put a heap of recommendations on my home page. There's a whole world of books that I would have had no idea of. This platform is the bee's knees. The book........

I have read a fair few of the mainstream thrillers: le Carré, et al. In this, the focus on who leads (the main protagonist) shifts: I've never seen that before.

Glued to it for two days. Infuriating! I have to sleep. Put in down, pull the covers up, close my eyes, fail to stop thinking about where the story is going. Read a few more pages, put it down......

I read this in 2023. My new friend on here, her name is Beth, she has wind in her hair, has asked me to join her gang. I agreed. I'm so easy to win over. Ohh well. I'm now re-reading her apple's book. She ought to offer me a signed copy.

Finished. I spent the weekend with him (Sam Mitchell). By Thursday's night, I'd decided he was up to something. It was the server problem: how he stepped up. That's what he does: no surprises. He then volunteers to nip to town: at the same time we have a couple cold-call salesmen doing the rounds. I was convinced. Friday, I left work, got the food in and that was me installed in my one-up-one-down for the duration.

I've just read the discussion on Fringe Fiction (unexplained by science) that relates to page 41 of this book. I've just bought the book and will get to it this evening.

Page 41:

My great aunt was at home when her husband was injured, he was a builder and at work and she knew. In those days not everyone had a phone at home. A police officer knocked on the door: she was sat waiting, coat on, bag packed and said to the officer, "I know." She even knew it was his arm that was damaged and he'd been taken to hospital. She said, "I felt it."
She died a week after he died.

I'm swooning... this guy risked his own life... because...

“How guilty will I feel each time I hear more news of more killing, Boris? Good people. Honest people. That’s why I hacked those accounts, Boris. Because it will help to put an end to what's happening and help save lives.”
“Because you want to help?”
“Yes, if I can.”
“Well, you can’t help.”

I haven't found why he can't, just yet.

At the end of a chapter: “Where he is, it might not be easy getting to a telephone.”
Rebecca stared at her aunt, wanting an explanation.
“We can’t say who he would trust. However, his only options might be his parents and you.”

At the start of the next Chapter:
With his notebook to hand, he lifted the receiver, ... and poked at the large black buttons.

That is such a sneaky thing to do ...

May 27, 2003 — Reuters: Afghan troops killed Taliban Commander, Mullah Ghausuddin, in a gun battle at Maradhow Village, Afghanistan. The body was identified, by a government official, and committed to the ground within 24 hours of death.

June 06, 2005 — The Pajhwok Afghan News: “The Afghan National Army, have arrested three men in the city of Tirin Kot. An official claimed one to be Mullah Ghausuddin.”

I'm so taken by what happens. There is a scene on a river barge where a young woman uses her assets (her flesh) and blinds a couple of police officers to what is actually happening: it did make me chuckle (human nature - men nature). There is a book (true account - I can't remember the name) about a woman serving with the SOE; in it she says, 'flash a bit of flesh and you'll get away with anything'.
