Status Updates From Prison notebooks - Gramsci

An aspect of the question alluded to elsewhere of “Dilettantism and Discipline”, from the point of view of the organizing center of a grouping is that of the “continuity” which tends to create a “tradition” — understood of course in an active and not a passive sense: as continuity in continuous development, but “organic development”.

But born into a backward peasant environment and deprived of either an adequate or a continuous education, Gramsci's success in school and university despite constant ill-health, under-nourishment and over-work was a triumph of intellectual purpose. Something of his individual experience is thus carried over into his repeated emphasis on learning as work.
