The entire book thus far has been utterly amazing, but when he gets to limited atonement, dang. It is absolutely amazing. He is both polemical and scholastic while caring and pastoral. This is a biblical matter, but for him also a personal one.

The third quarter is very focused on limited atonement. Rutherford argues well, and he does theology in a personal and worshipful way. His case for limited atonement is forceful; he wrestles Arminianism to the ground by exposing the ways that it ultimately ruins any high or hopeful estimation of the character of God. Now if only the man had an editor.

Not without a dry passage or two so far, but truly excellent.

I read the introduction today. Terribly long and unreadable sentences dripping with adoration for the magnificent glory of the person and work of Christ. How can you not love Rutherford? I would be content to spend the rest of my life trying to make head and tail of him.

Our love to Christ is sickly, crazy, and full of jealousies and suspicions. Temptations make false reports of Christ, and we easily believe them. Jealousies argue love, and the strongest of loves, even marriage-love.
