Nothing like being put on display, especially in front of people who didn’t appear fond of her jumping the line. It hadn’t been her idea, she wanted to say. It belonged to the jocular celebrity among them.
Meanwhile, Charlie almost looked … hurt. Like a puppy with sad eyes. “No, really. Let me get this.”
The customers’ impatience was almost palpable, so she caved to speed things along.

Charlie tipped his head toward Joy, whose nose was glued to her notebook. “Look at her! She’s all snooty high-rise Chicago big-city girl. She struts around town in her expensive clothes, blows past the speed limits like they don’t apply to her, and generally throws her weight around … as if she has any to throw.”

Noah mock-whistled. “Wow! She really pissed you off."

Eyes the color of Jameson 18-year were perfectly balanced atop sharp cheekbones. With smooth olive feature, she was stunning, despite the hard set of her mouth. With those looks and her high-risk, high-reward vibe, she no doubt got what she wanted ninety-nine percent of the time.

Charlie would soon be part of the one percent that landed in her loss column.

Funny thing was, though, his brows had been furrowed, his expression one of concentration rather than mocking. No, the mocking had come right after she busted his squeezable ass.
