"Early on O'Brien recognized the 'Tim O'Brien' narrating persona of 'If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home' as just that's A persona." ... "The schism of one's paper selves will become part of the narrative fabric of 'The Things They Carried', a work of fiction O'Brien ... believes expresses his first war far better than [a 'fairly honest' memoir or any nonfiction could].

"By writing a 'Tim O'Brien' character into 'The Things They Carried', O'Brien authentically captures his ongoing relationship to himself and his experience of war"

Learning the inspiration for one of, in my opinion, the best chapters in TTTC is yet again fascinating. The truth versus how O'Brien portrayed it for us. He's done it again!
(Chapter: "In The Field", where Kiowa drowns in the shit field. (written here as "drown in a village's common outdoor latrine area". pretty different than "shit field")

"In the memoir, O'Brien uses the phrase 'the man who shot her' five times; in the fiction, he uses the phrase 'the man I killed' four times (title included)."

I need to put this book down for now, so I figure while he’s getting on the plane to Vietnam is a good place to stop
