I almost caught my breath at the realization of what I was saying. I was officially dropping out of med school. With less than a semester to go, I was giving up my dream. It stabbed me. The thought stabbed me like a knife, and my throat went suddenly dry.

I still wasn't sure about the arrangement, but with Paget's full-time school still two weeks away, I needed all the help I could get to keep up with Paget. It was a little irksome that a high school quarterback and an elderly neighbor were doing a better job of caring for my sister than I had been.

So how much was her bail ?

The thought of playing sleuth suddenly held a growing appeal to me. In some ways it was like being a doctor. You looked at the symptoms as if they were clues and then solved the mystery of the illness when you issued a diagnosis. This was kind of like that—of course, as a doctor you tried to avoid turning your patients into corpses.

There was a quote from me at the bottom, it read: "I know what I saw, and it was indeed the frozen body of a male subject. I've attended medical school for three years now, and if there's one thing I can recognize—it's a dead body." Oh, shumbunnies.

I scratched the back of my neck while thinking of diagnosing myself with coverall-itis. Wonder if I can add it to the Physician's Desk Reference ?

Our parents had died when Paget was just a baby, but I was nearly twelve when it happened. Their deaths had spiraled my world out of control. Aunt Patty, my father's sister, had moved home to Millbrook from her life in Las Vegas ....

Mandy has quite the potty mouth- 'crud on a stick', 'crap on a stick', 'Oh, shumbunnies'. She cracks me up with her word usage.
