Our enemies become the enemy, a subtle but substantive difference. Freed of comparison to us, the people we fear are generically, and entirely, assessed as wrong. Which usually categorizes them as inherently dangerous. Too dangerous to trust, too evil to empathize with. They, by our reflexive judgment and definition, are the enemy.
