Unnecessary extras that dominate the plot? Yes.
Unnecessary spice? Yes.
(I don't usually say that last one, but it applies in this case. Too much spice and not enough emotional connection can hurt a book.)

I was super excited for this book. But it's falling flat. 😑 The writing is just...sub-par compared to the first one. The plot is moving slowly, predictably, yet feels rushed, but they took 3 years to publish it after the first one! Make it make sense! 😫
