I’m a rabbi. I won the award for Jewish Studies in my ordination class. I still learned something new in the chapter on early exhilic leaders. I now feel like I have to read a book on Hiwi al-Balkhi.

The chapters are varied in their genres. Some are humorous essays, some are dialogues, some are illustrations in styles that draw from the world of gaming or graphic novels/manga. I was shocked to find the short essay on women in Jewish history relatively thorough in its overview, balancing the complicated ways in which Jewish women have been not included and excluded from Jewish life.

I’m enjoying the irreverent humor greatly. My main concern with the book so far isn’t with the continent itself but rather that it assumes basic knowledge of Biblical stories.
