I would classify this as Women’s Lit or LitFic more than romance.

I really like the character of Nia. She reminds me of myself, including my strengths and my flaws and I can relate to her immensely. I’m sure a lot of professional women can. It’s a nice snapshot into life after achieving your singular goal - reaching the pinnacle of your career. That life involves more work but may also involve an upending of your private life. Call it midlife crisis? 4 star loading.

So this book has lived up to all my expectations. I do have some criticisms though. We see both MCs working together for 2 years before the relationship changes. But we’re only given snippets of any attraction between them. This is partly because this is a character study of an attorney that rises to the pinnacle of her career and how this pinnacle changes her, including sexually. It’s not primarily a romance.

Also she’s been seeing Justine for 2 YEARS! 😳😱 That’s a long-ass affair.

“It was so much more than the touch of a woman, though. It was a meeting of the mind.”
Another point in the demisexual category. I find I like books about women that remind me of myself or express my idea of love. That’s what’s attractive about this book to me.

WOAH!! Gay marriage is legal in California? According to google, "Gay marriage was first legalized in California on June 16, 2008, but this was overturned by a constitutional ban in November 2008. It was then legalized a second time on June 28, 2013, which became effective on January 1, 2015, after a federal court decision..." THIS MAKES NO SENSE. Was it set in 2008? This is the most important question of this book.

This legal portion of the book is mid. I liked when it was only a side part of the story but making it center has distracted from the intensity of the read. I love legal stories. I think this is poorly written and that may be imply that the author is not an attorney. I get the reason it's being added though. I even agree with it. But it's just less interesting than all the other things going on in the book.

So this story is entertaining. I don't know how. It's a character study, more than a plot and it's clearly a romance. It works in all the ways I wouldn't expect it to. I'm leaning to 5. Still early though.

Is Nia demisexual? I don’t know if this is particularly addressed but her reaction to Justine might imply she’s only aroused in limited circumstances. She may also be asexual. I wonder if the author was thinking about these things when crafting the character. I’m also eager to see in context how the Nia/Colleen relationship converts into a sexual one given Nia’s sexual disposition. I’m definitely invested.

No way this book isn't set in a pre-smartphone world. "Lol means laugh out loud"??? I'm placing this between nineties and pre-2008.

I'm hooked. Didn't realize how well fleshed out the MCs relationship was.

I know Colleen is Nia’s primary love interest and the romance doesn’t pick up until the second half of the book, but when the author describes Colleen’s voice from Nia’s perspective, it has a foreshadowing.

I feel like I’m reading a book set before the advent of smartphone technology. It feels pre-2007 but post 1970? The tech (because this is about a high flying lawyer) feels distinctly old school. Lol.
