Status Updates From Whispers to the Heart

She couldn’t feel Mac any longer and knew if he had been able to save her, he would have been here by now. The only way Dalton could have gotten to her was if Mac was hurt…or worse. Rennie lifted her eyes to meet his, her heart cold as ice. She didn’t care what happened to her anymore. Dalton had somehow managed to get to Mac and she was going to make damn sure he paid for it.

“I think we both know it’s already gone too far to back out now. Maybe I didn’t fully comprehend before, but I do now, and I wouldn’t have you any other way. I love you, Rennie, it’s as plain and simple as that. Yes, it will bother me that I can’t protect you from the fear or the pain you’ll go through, but I can be there to make sure you come out of it okay.”

“The hell you will,” Mac growled. “You’re going to do exactly what I tell you to or I’ll arrest you myself and place you under protective custody.” He drew in a deep breath and steadied his voice. “You are not alone anymore, Rennie. We’ll get through this together, I promise. Trust me, honey, can you do that?”

“Oh, no you don’t, sweetheart,” he admonished. “You’re not going to double my guilt by pushing me away. Like it or not, we are an item now and I’m not leaving you alone tonight. We don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to, but I am going to sleep with you in my arms and that is final.”

“We need to stop,” he said with a sheepish grin, “it’s starting to get extremely…uncomfortable.” Rennie gave him a puzzled look. “Uncomfortable? Kissing me is uncomfortable?” “I told you I was having quite a reaction to you. Unfortunately for me, I don’t think you’re ready to sleep with me yet.” “Yet? You’re very sure of yourself, Detective Logan.”

Mac watched her face closely, his chest squeezing at the very real pain she was experiencing. That wasn’t to say he believed in her psychic ability exactly, but he didn’t think she was involved with Angel’s disappearance. Her breathing became rough, erratic, and she started to tremble violently. Good God, what was going on inside that pretty head of hers?
