Duke Medical Doctor Eric Westman has been on a keto diet for decades. And this reservation by PhD and MD to endorse a keto diet to treat metabolic disorder has limited the study in-vivo (so to speak). It is the same as with Atkins which Dr Westman followed.

In section 3.11 on Keto diet, this otherwise great book says...
"I’ll add a final word of caution: while ketogenic diets can be an indispensable tool in certain diseases, its use in the presence of mitochondrial disease—at this point—is controversial. So, of all the therapies listed in this book, the one that would seem to require specific expertise in its application would be this diet."
which IMO is unfounded.

Ok, the newer book that I am reading by this author was added to GR, all of the notes on this book belong on that one. Other than re-type it all up, I'm just going to add to that one and close out this one.

Rotenone is an agricultural pesticide that causes mitochondrial damage and is used to cause Parkinson's disease in animals to study them. A chemical KNOWN to cause Parkinson's in animals is USED on our FOOD. HOW IS THIS EVEN LEGAL?!?! Non-fiction books really make me angry and sad.

Thank you! Fatty acids are a better fuel source than sugar! Faith in humanity, restored. :D

First thing I'm not sure about. I don't think glucose is the best fuel for cells. What about fat and keytones? Unless those break down into glucose? Must research!

Only caloric restriction, while still nutritionally dense, has been shown to extend maximum life-span potential in nearly all species tested.

"...we don't form distinct extensions from our hands to form fingers. Instead, after the hand develops, apoptosis takes hold to eliminate the cells in between the digits. When this fails, the result is 'webbed' hands. The shaping of the body is brought about by subtraction, not addition."

Every DAY about 10 BILLION cells die via apoptosis (cell suicide). That's insane!

"Complex I seems to generate free radicals if there is too much fuel relative to demand and Complex III seems to generate them if ATP isn't being used up fast enough." Ie-eating too much and exercising too little. Joy.

Bacteria can gain new genes via lateral gene transfer very easily, so genetically engineering crops and animals can be a BIG problem if those modified genes get out... Franken-food scares me. :/

Excited and nervous. The author is explaining I guess the biochem of the cell. I hope my background interest in biology is enough to keep up!
