Winfield rolled his eyes. “I don’t get concussions.”
“Just because you’ve got a hard head doesn’t mean you can’t get a concussion,” Lee said.

He nodded. “Interesting. I wonder… Do you think if I did end up killing you anyone would care?” he asked, tilting his head to the side. “Or would it be just another ketchup stain on the napkin of life?”
“Honestly?” Lee asked. “That was the weirdest metaphor I’ve ever heard, and I can’t get past that part.”

Lee nodded, then frowned. “Just a quick question, ma’am. Does anyone know what happened to Dr. Quinn?”

“The medicine woman?” Knox asked.

Lol I remember that show! I haven't watched that in like 10 years....

It is entirely P.D. Atkerson’s fault I didn’t go to sleep till far past midnight last night.

Only the epilogue left to do!

Since we won't be going anywhere, I just might be able to finish this one this weekend.

“This was always going to be a temporary base,” Lever said, not even bothering to look over at Lee. “We were just waiting for you to show up. Ah! We’re here,” he said as they stepped into what Lee could only guess was a large garage buried under the mountains outside. But it was what the parked inside it that really caught his attention.

“Now that’s how you deal with a problem,” Lever said, lowering the taser.
“Yeah,” Lee gasped out, yanking the strings that connected him to the taser out. “If you’re a mall-cop.” He grimaced and shoved himself to his feet.
Lever clapped his hands and the light turned on. “Does anything keep you down?” he asked. “Maybe I should use an elephant tranquilizer on you when this is over and see what happens.”
“No thanks."

For several minutes, Lee and Ava didn’t speak as all their energy was spent on trudging through several feet of heavy snow. Finally, a black spot appeared on the horizon and Lee recognized it as an old building.
But this building was far from abandoned.

Swallowing as he shoved himself to his feet, Winfield fought back the pain that shot through his leg. His heart thudded in his chest as the man he’d idolized as a child stepped into the room.
“Father,” Winfield whispered, staring at the only person in his life who’d ever commander fear from him.

Lee pulled the card back out slowly and firmly while turning the handle of the door. The next second, the door unlocked. Once this was over maybe he’d anonymously give them a few pointers on how they could update these older officer security.

“Goody. Почему это происходит со мной?” ‘Why is this happening to me?’ Lee mumbled, running his hand through his hair as he placed his hand on the table.

Dozens of waiters, cooks and other employees came and went through the kitchen. Lee doubted anyone would even notice he wasn’t supposed to be there.
He grabbed up a napkin and went out through the door.
Next, he moved behind the host’s desk and slipped the napkin over one arm as he picked up a pile of menus with his other hand.

In that split second the whole house was plunged into complete darkness, and the silence that followed was eerie.
“Was that me?” Digit asked.
“I don’t think so. Neither of you move,” Lee ordered, reaching into his jacket for the glow sticks he’d decided to carry several days before.
“Here,” Lee said, holding out a couple to them.
“You just happen to carry glow stick around?”

I felt slightly evil while writing this last chapter. :P

“Yes,” Lee said. “Winfield forced me to go to a school and Dr. Quinn’s son helped me out with biology, one thing I apparently have a problem with.”
Winfield laughed. “Which is ironic since his maternal grandfather was a scientist who specialized in biology.”
What? Lee frowned as he glanced toward his father. “I didn’t know that.”
Winfield tilted his head. “Really? I never told you that?”

“Distrust is something we have in common.”
“I suppose so,” Lee said, stepping around the table. He grabbed his bag and slung it over his shoulder. “Let’s get out of here,” he said to his father, then he turned back toward Agent Ava. “Why don’t you go eat crumpets or something, and leave finding Grew to us. That was your plan in the first place, wasn’t it?” Without waiting for a response, Lee headed out the door.

“What do you want?” Lee asked, shoving himself off the wall so he could stand face-to-face with Knox. “Or did you come all this way to show your face so we’d have nightmares for the next week?”
“You would know about giving people nightmares, now wouldn’t you?"

“Well, we’d better check with the nurse first,” Winfield said. “We don’t to be in the middle of finding out what it means, and have them kick us out of the building.”
Lee rolled his eyes. “Get blacklisted at a hospital? Now that would be interesting.”

Agents were crawling all over the place and they might as well have sent out a mass text telling everyone that they were there. This was no longer a covert operation.
Lee wiped his now rain-wet hair back and looked around him. After only a moment of looking around, he spotted Knox in the middle of the chaos, giving orders. Forcing himself to stay calm, Lee worked his way toward him.

“We’re in position,” Lee said. “Can you take the target out without drawing attention to us?”
“Yeah, I can,” Winfield said. He decided this wasn’t the time to tell Lee that he wasn’t a novice to this part of the job.
Moving his rifle back over to aim at the guard, Winfield lined the shot up and pulled the trigger. The next second, the man crumbled to the ground.
