Aren't economic and financial synonyms? Google seems to say one has more to do with production of goods and the other with organization of money. Not great writing here...or anywhere else. This is a difficult read.

Kuang's Poppy War series is literally about India, China, and Britian. Kuang changes some names, but seems like the results are the same. Maybe that's why it was such a shitshow.

After slave trade ended, many people emigrated out of the gold coast and other areas of Africa. So they were exploited then colonized for ~150 years then abandoned.

While Britain settled on the east coast of America, France settled further west (canada?) and Spain settled farther south and for a while controlled the carribean and South America.
