Britian ended slave trade in 1806 but didn't stop using slaves in sugar production until 1833 after slaves revolted across the 'west indies' (Caribbean)

Apparently, indigenous cultures were not nations in the eyes of the British people. Therefor, forcing them to accept our faith helped them because they learned English which in turn helped them to become their own nation. 🤥🤯💩

It seems like a book on the British Empire would be JUST the place to use an Oxford comma. Apparently not.

"In the century from 1851 the phenomenon of the international exhibition - a successful combination of education, entertainment and trade fair - reflected Britian's attitudes to the Empire and helped mould national perceptions as instruments of imperial propaganda.

Pardon??

My edit (with phrases ftb) : Exhibitions began as industrial trade fairs and soon developed into demonstrations of imperial pride.

"But the basis of British power was economic and financial strength."

Aren't economic and financial synonyms? Google seems to say one has more to do with production of goods and the other with organization of money. Not great writing here...or anywhere else. This is a difficult read.

Kuang's Poppy War series is literally about India, China, and Britian. Kuang changes some names, but seems like the results are the same. Maybe that's why it was such a shitshow.

Mostly reading the images and maps now, and referencing the text by skimming through.

The British became vikings! 👏🤣

Steamers...shallow-draught...able to penetrate coastal areas previously inaccessible...whether chastising belligerent natives or protecting client rulers. Brief bombardments, the seizure of property, sometimes with the launch of raids or even punitive expeditions ashore...

Terrible transitions in this intro. Could have been easy to read if sentences weren't so strangely broken up.

Markets were more important than territorial title and authority and economic success were achieved without... use a semicolon! Then they start a sentence with 'But' uhg! 💔

Britain ended slavery trade in 1806 but not in America until 1860something.

The French Canadians aided America in revolutionary War for freedom and we ceded to them formerly French territories... then took them back later??

After slave trade ended, many people emigrated out of the gold coast and other areas of Africa. So they were exploited then colonized for ~150 years then abandoned.
