hate when a book i’ve been avoiding reading is good. clarice lispector, virginia woolfe i thought this was you but this actually stream of consciousness with very specific icy seaside imagery tone and feel. almost gothic, always frosty.

The father now lay in bed for good. The summer grew hot. In August all the grass burned up, brown. Often he didn't have the energy to keep himself clean, they had to wash him and change him. His gaze was often glassy, stiff, distant: he didn't hear, didn't react. Was like a thing.

I love the feeling when you just started on a book but immediately KNOW this is going to be one of your favourite books

the writing is poetic, but in a way that seems a bit superficial to me? most of the icy tone comes from visual descriptions rather than the arrangement of her words. dunno how i feel yet

So many similes... 🫪

I'm not really enjoying this... The omniscient narrator's voice is monotonous.
