Everything is awkward. For a heroine so focused on her beauty or lack thereof, the over-the-top fat shaming of a male character struck me as oddly lacking in compassion. Then, there is the marriage itself: unbelievable movements. And then, the fast connection with the too good family vs her evil family. Just awkward.

Second of all, this:
"He picked up two cases and heaved them in the wagon. Glass shattered. “My pictures!” she shouted."
It deeply bothers me when authors don't make word choices that align with the personality of the character or the time period in which the story takes place. "Cried" or "exclaimed" would have been a far better selection, since I can't imagine a meek woman in the 1800s just up and SHOUTING.
