Ugh I wish he would tell her the truth now before it gets more involved

I turned my head and found his mouth with mine, gave him the kiss I’d been saving for him all day. Every bit of time we were apart was an irritation. Or maybe it was our love that was the irritation, always itching underneath my skin, making me restless and eager.

There was plenty of time to wonder about things as we waited for J.D. to be treated. Mostly I thought about how a terrible experience like this shifted perspective completely. I could have lost J.D. tonight, or we both might have died. Everything I’d been upset about seemed inconsequential now. I loved J.D. and didn’t care about his stupid lie. I only wanted him to be all right.

You’re unbelievable.” I didn’t like this crazy guerilla-style therapy. “Not trying to be rough, son. I’m just trying to reach you. Is it working?” He bent over his desk and wrote something, ripped the page off the pad, and handed it to me. “Here’s your prescription. I recommend you make it last more than a month this time. These aren’t Skittles, Wyatt.”

“I like J.D. I trust him, despite that one hiccup. I think I even love him. So yeah, I’m all in on this relationship, and I hope J.D. is too.” I paused, then added, “The moment we met—the first time—there was a flare of something between us. And we hadn’t even spoken yet. I can’t explain it, but I felt it, and that has to mean something.”

I looked him in the eyes. “I like Leah. A lot. Don’t be an as$ to her.” He frowned and nodded. “I won’t. Swear.” Micah was in rare serious mode. “If this woman means something to you, I won’t screw it up. I want you to be happy, bro. It’s about time.”

“Wait. We should… I’m not sure we should do this.” His voice was strangled. “There are things…” He broke off. I could hardly put together a coherent thought in my mind either. “Yeah,” I murmured. “You’re right. Too soon.” “No, it’s not that.” He breathed, then, “Yes. We should think about this.” “Shut up, Voice of Reason. I hate you.”

I followed Leah, staying well behind so I wouldn’t be spotted by her sighted companion. Leah’s parents wanted it that way. I was a shadow, a guardian angel, a stalker, and I felt like a real dick for doing it. But I needed the pay and the apartment badly enough to swallow my doubts.

Here I was, in my very first apartment. Sharing a dorm room at BU or having a private room in the hospital didn’t count as being on my own. This was it. The real deal. As I listened to the hum of the fridge and distant sounds drifting from other apartments, I’d never felt more truly alone.

Blind as a bat. Flying blind. Turn a blind eye. Blinded by science. Blind date. Blind alley. Blind leading the blind. Robbed blind. No one as blind as he who will not see. F-king B-L-I-N-D. That’s me.
