This book is the epitome of modern-day humanization of animals. Three people died and she’s more about a horse. Her servant was murdered and she gets horny with the colonizer. If this book has no haters, I am dead.

Ozul is one of the most lackluster villains I’ve had the pleasure of reading about. He does all his dirty work from afar, drains a bunch of characters I don’t care about and I’m supposed to fear him? No.

I hate Talon so much, man. I’m supposed to think he’s a good guy after killing countless just because he act like he cares so he can win the heart of a girl. Not only this but his treats the servants and potential allies like shit. I hate him, perhaps the most easily hatable MMC.

Damn. The author knew that the colonizer/indigenous romance would be so shitty that they resulted to a forced marriage. So bad that they had to be forced to be together.

The Queen would rather let all the people die than let her daughter use a power that could save them all.

I wanted to like the queen as this selfless figure. Well, out the window with that. The general is not talking down to her but rather stating a very real reality of the fact that if there isn’t sacrifice there won’t be anything for the daughter to fight for. She can’t possibly be that stupid.

Holy inconsideration. The general is like hey, we’re asking your daughter to sacrifice the bond with a talking horse not her life because hey, my daughter died in the war. I felt loss too. The Queen is like fuck that, your daughter was just a rando but my daughter is special because she’s a royal. The fuck?

General Isa might be the smartest character in this entire book. A horse or your entire tribe of people - which one is more important?

I want to see the indigenous tribes who conformed, the way that they interact with those who didn’t. How do they fit or are seen in this towns. Second class citizens? What about the extent of the racism? There is so much intrigue around this but we don’t explore it which sucks.

This book feels very manifest destiny inspired which is brilliant if there was no Pocahontas flim-esqe romance between the main character and the colonizer. Why does romance always have to be the endgame? Why can’t the main character just say fuck it and chase the colonizers off of their land?

We all lived in harmony before the Zephyrians came - What is this? ATLA? You’re telling me that there was no wars, no political conflict, nothing but peace before the war? I don’t believe that for one second or at least, it doesn’t make the story believable. All civilizations were shaped through conflict.

-and a shielding? Apparently she’s not even good at that. This tribe seems to be filled with cousins. The magic system is very, very under explained.

Oh my god, the tribes have some of the most boring and useless magic possible. Find gemstones, make glass? This could have been the same tribe combined. And then don’t even get me started on the next one - one can grow trees and other crops? This could have been one tribe. The Queen of All Queen is a healer?

I can’t tell if this book is middle grade or ‘supposed’ to be adult - same goes for the main characters - how old are they supposed to be? And Talon’s chapters are so boring.
