We learn more about what Angel truly desires: Gabriela's fortune. What his father gives him isn't enough for the luxuries he longs for, so he desperately wants to marry Gabriela. Essentially, a marriage of convenience.

It's clear that Orrego Luco truly enjoyed describing the landscapes of 1800s Chile. He describes them with passion and meticulous detail, both of the creatures and the men, the poor and the rich, the machines and the antiques.

Don Leonidas is described as a weary man, someone who has no desire to work and who, now that he has consolidated his considerable wealth, tries to focus on politics. This may or may not be a critique of the oligarchic system that held power at the time, in which, although people voted for their candidates, these were always powerful landowners.

It is noticeable that the aristocracy of Orrego Luco is a friendlier group than the one described in the older books, but I would like to highlight certain aspects that I consider more important, such as the necessary importance that Orrego Luco gives to common holidays like Easter and the joy it generates for both children and adults and for both the poor and the powerful.
