Omg. The poor viking. They thought he died in battle and had him on the funeral pyre. Woke up while it was on fire. Instead of helping him off and praising Odin or whoever, they thought he was a zombie or something, held him down and that was that.

I think this is my favorite section. Historical stories of ways people absolutely should have dies, but somehow they survived.

I haven't thought of the Children's Crusade in at least twenty years and am sad to be reminded of its existence. So I am sharing.

Wonderful way to see if you are innocent or not, they get an iron bar searing hot, and make you carry it on your back for a certain amount of steps. Then bandage your wounds and check back in three days. If they are healing properly, God has declared you innocent. If not, guilty.

Never thought about the damage an arrow would do, especially when talking about in the middle ages.

Swollen eyes? One treatment in the Dark Ages was to capture a live crab, take out its eyes and press them against the neck.of the ailing person. Don't forget to release the blind crab back into the ocean.

How does the author know Vikings didn't roast marshmallows on their bonfires? Seriously, now I'm thinking of Vikings sitting around a bonfire roasting marshmallows and telling campfire stories.
