Weird combination of excellent research and eyebrow-raising historical caricature. I still really want to like this book, but it's trying way too hard to be shocking.

Not even through the first page, and a man has already clothed a dead body by putting on its dress first and petticoats last.
Combine that with the weird, dire, Interpol-esque, decidedly nonstandard copyright notice, and I'm getting a little nervous.
