Oh wow something just occurred to me. In book 1 it's clear Gansey enjoys the JOURNEY. His journal, the act of the exploration, etc. Is that why when he says it ends today it finally ends? Cabeswater was indulging him the whole time?? So it kept going for his sake and now it ends for his sake?? Oh wow
