Loving this! Reminds me of Susan Howe's Birthmark. I must confess I haven't read Moby Dick, despite numerous attempts, and know little about Melville's life. The Colombus parallels and the story about the narrator and his brother are more interesting than I expected.

it’s really tickling my sense of nostalgia for that specific period of time in my life when i examimed. examined every feeling,look, object - my own gentle quest for meaning.

i was very moved. maybe it’s personal -of course it is personal- but it felt like i’m reading a quilt sewn by different generations with such humble elegance. maybe i cried. and it’s only page 23.
