The term “essential oil” is derived from the term “quintessential oil,” and the concept dates back to ancient times when “quintessence,” or spirit life force, was considered the fifth element after fire, water, air, and earth. The ancients believed the practice of extracting these oils from plants was actually the removal of the spirit of the plant, hence the name.

Breathing keeps us alive, but it also keeps us vibrant. The older we get, the less we breathe. Babies inhale 30 to 60 breaths per minute. Adults only take 12 to 18 breaths per minute, and the elderly only 10 breaths a minute. In addition to oxygenating our blood, breathing also helps us create memories. We breathe in the moment and make it last. But if we are breathing less are we also remembering less?
