Meh. Some things I liked, some I didn't.

“Stop right there,” he barked, sitting up in bed. She froze, standing in his open doorway, stark naked. “What?” “We have to talk about this.” “Not now, Zeke. I’m late for work.” And then she disappeared in a flash of smooth, white skin and tousled, reddish-gold hair. He flopped back on the mattress, wondering if he’d just been a hit-it-and-run victim.

“He thinks about her ‘that way’ and a thousand other ways, too, I’ll bet.” “At least a thousand,” Cal agreed. “In the car. On a bar. Against a door. On the floor. In the shower. In a tower.” He paused. “I’m channeling Dr. Seuss.” Jake snickered. “On a bed. In a shed. In a tent. Under a vent. On a slope. With some rope.”

He pulled her closer, tucking her smaller body against his side. “Shh,” he murmured. “It’s going to be okay.” The fact that he was comforting her when she was upset about something that had happened to him … well, that just made her cry harder. He was the best person she’d ever known—innately kind, quietly compassionate, and surprisingly thoughtful.

Her conscience scolded her for being voyeuristic, but she gave it the finger. She had spent hours wondering what this man looked like naked, and right or wrong, she was going to take the opportunity to assuage her curiosity.

He’d never heard of The Weeknd until Margo had moved in 2 months ago, and he wasn’t a fan. Even if you could endure the guy’s annoying falsetto, his hair looked like a pineapple sprouting from his head, and his name was just plain stupid. Zeke had grown up listening to Soundgarden, Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Metallica. That was real music.

At this point, he had only a few life goals. He wanted to sleep through the night without any nightmares. He wanted to run in marathons again. He wanted to end his three-year dry spell and eff a soft, sexy woman until he came so hard he passed out. But all those things required him to do one thing: deal with the toxic emotions he had from getting his leg blown off in an IED attack.

She had spent the past six days touring apartments, and it hadn’t taken her long to realize that the only places she could afford were dumps. She wasn’t spoiled. She wasn’t used to luxury. She could handle dinky, dingy, and dirty. But she couldn’t handle dangerous.
