Right, because when someone calls you and you don't know who it is, your first question is 'What's this in connection with" rather than "Who's this?" And before you come to the point of who is actually calling, you agree to get into a car they are sending? Makes sense. Not!

That struck me as overegging the pudding,
I learn so many new phrases from these very British books :)

"I wanted to get a butcher's, as I said, but I felt a right idiot, sneaking about. Like I was the one doing something illegal, not them."
Get a butcher's? Okay, I'm stumped. Anyone know what this means?

“Good game?” The scoreline suggested a bit of a try fest.
‘Try fest’ — that’s another one for my collection. I thought I was fairly fluent in Brit-speak, because about 25% of the fiction I’ve read is set in the UK. But every once in a while — all too rarely — a book comes along chock-full of Britishisms I’ve never seen before, & I realize that really, I know almost nothing. Books like this are great fun. :)

"None of the usual 'I love you' before the phone was put down, but what could Robin expect after he'd been such a wazzock?"
Wazzock! Now that's a new one. "What a wazzock!" It has a ring to it, doesn't it? I think I'm going to incorporate it into my vocabulary. 😁

Ah, Brit-speak.
A phone conversation:
"We want to talk to Mr. Phillips..."
"You'll have to wait. He's just gone down to theatre."
Oh, he's watching a play? No, he's in the operating room. Duh.
That one I'd seen before, but others are new to me, like "telling pork pies." Whut LOL.
But I love it when the Britishisms are left in; it's quirky & mind-expanding. What a loss when American publishers take them out.
