If you want to convey that someone is a bad person, it may not be best to say that they have rich chocolate running through their veins instead of blood. I mean what is that supposed to convey? Everybody hears chocolate and they think something sweet and tasty that everybody loves. Out of context, if someone said a person had rich chocolate in their veins instead of blood, the worst you'd assume is that they were fat

I understand from context that some important Revelation has been made and some important argument is happening. However, I'll be damned if I know what the Revelation is or why these people are arguing.

Anyway, once again, I understand from context that this girl's just being racist, but why did she randomly change the subject to music? Like they're not talking about music. They're talking about grades. And she's just randomly like, "I guess you like hip hop music the most." And of course, 🙄 Rain only likes Mozart.

How is this girl finding time to get straight A's in an elite private school, do practice for a play, have an active social life, cook elaborate meals, and clean a gigantic mansion all by herself?

She describes feeling violated by a guy kissing her against her will and that is absolutely valid but then she's like yeah he tried to rape me nbd. Neiderman please die.

Why does everybody in this book keep acting like it's normal to call Downs a blood disease because it has to do with chromosomes and chromosomes are in the blood. Yeah, man, they're in your skin and hair too, but you wouldn't call Downs a bad haircut or a skin infection. Like if it was just this guy I could brush it off as him being a liar, but it's Rain and her friend too.

"Rich people are too complicated...I actually longed to be back in the Projects, sitting in my room, worrying about nothing more than what I would make us all for dinner." And the gangbangers who killed your sister, tried to rape you, threatened to kill your brother, and set you on fire.

Your protagonist can either be a smart girl from the ghetto who is used to fighting off unwanted sexual advances OR an ingenue whose extreme naivete is being taken advantage of. She can not be both. Fuck you mean this girl is shocked at the idea that the boy who pinned her down and ripped her clothes off might have lied to get in her pants.

How does she have time to be making dinners that must take at least an hour? Doesn't she have homework? And practice for the play in which she is the lead? When does she sleep?

For someone who's supposed to be grateful and humble and uncomplaining she sure complains a lot.

Jesus God this is boring. Somebody poison somebody.

Honestly tho that wouldn't even help because Rain got set on actual fire and it didn't even make it 10% more interesting.

I'll admit that I'm an idiot about these things, but why IS the doc insisting on an ambulance for a scheduled procedure? Like am I crazy or are ambulances for emergency transit? Why CAN'T she have her driver to take her to and from her scheduled surgery?

"I began to understand that she thought of illness as weakness, something to be ashamed of." Didn't we already establish that that's how she thinks? Why is this being restated?

What grade is Rain in? They said her half brother was two years younger than her and a junior in highschool, right? Or am I tripping?

Pride is bad unless you are a poor black mother of three too proud to take welfare. Then it is righteous because you are proving yourself to be One Of The Good Ones unlike those BAD poor black people who, um, do what is best for their children no matter what it costs their pride.

Naturally she's the best actress in her elite school despite the fact that some of these girls have prob been attending plays and even performing for years. Tho these girls are quite unacademic, actually. It hit me before when she was apparently the only one who knew what Hamlet was about. I thought maybe they were playing dumb to get attention from the possibly dreamt teacher. Aren't they all being groomed for Yale?

I understand this is the kind of private school where the demographics lean white no matter what. But this is a city with 40,000 more black people than white people. That's right, I looked up the racial demographics of Richmond, Virginia in 2000. Just for this. Again, I know it's the kind of private school that might have an artificially high white pop, but they're acting like they've never seen a black person.

Ok I understand from context that these girls are being racist, but what exactly is going on?
"I wonder what [random guy] will do about this?" I assume "this" is her being cast in what I believe is a race blind role.
"What do you mean?"

*To another girl* "what does she mean?"

Quick question: how is her mama too proud for welfare, but not too proud for federally subsidized housing? Subsidized housing is a form of welfare. I mean I guess "welfare" is used differently depending on the person you're talking to, but in general, if what is more broadly known as "welfare" is a government handout, surely public housing is too?

At long last this has grown decent. Rain has grown a spine and her grandmother is amusing to me.

This mf has a habit of spending pages and pages on his perfect, splendid, angelic heroines feeling guilty over shit that is clearly not their fault and then spending half a page on the heroines being lit the fuck on fire.
Like they just lit her on fire, THEY LIT HER ON FIRE and he spends like 4 sentences on the actual event and a handful more on her going to the hospital.

It sucks that Beni was killed off because she was like. The only interesting character. She should have been the protagonist. Even just her feeling guilty would have been more interesting. Idk how the plot is even gonna move forward now that the only active character is dead.

"her hot and cold weather friends" bro what?

Of all the phrases VC used, Neiderman really was like a dog with a bone with "cockeyed optimist."

I'm just saying that when VC wrote incest she had the chutzpah to make it real incest.
