Dare had found out that someone had murdered his father. After that he had decided that it was best to let Emma go. This was upsetting for Emma because she was going to accept his marriage proposal.

Emma and Dare found Kate Dare's sister and was able to escape. What they didnt know was that her stepbrother along with the people who shot Dare were after them. They were able to sneak past all of them and get somewhere that no one knew about. Kates stepbrother on the other hand was led in the wrong direction. Dare also had decided that he was going to ask for Emma's hand in marriage even though she already engaged.

While Dare and Emma are at the Inn, they decide that it is best to tell someone about what is going on. When Emma goes to do so she sees the men who attacked them telling the authorities about them and making it seem like they are the criminals. While they were thinking of what to do they get a knock on the door from the authorities.

Dare's sister was taken and when he went after her he got shot. Emma and her servant Sally were running away from Emma's family and came across Dare because the person driving Emma and Sally's carriage was drunk and wrecked them. While they were on the side of the road the people who took Dare and his sister found them and tried taking them but Dare saved them. They are now at an Inn after a hard walk through sleet.
