As he walked out in the parking lot and headed to the truck, he saw Glenna talking to a tall, dark-haired man. Inside of a minute Mitch realized it was Villareal. And he held a fucking gun on her. Mitch ducked behind the adjacent row of cars, trusting that Glenna had seen him and that she’d keep Villareal distracted long enough for Mitch to get the jump on him.

You’re looking at me like you want to...” “I do,” he said roughly. “But it’s still not happening.” “Because I have amnesia.” “Yeah. Because of that.” She gave him a long look, then shrugged. “Okay.” Okay? What the hell did that mean? Something told him she hadn’t accepted his decision as final.

He leaned his forehead against hers. “Much as I’d like to stay here, I’m sure your brothers are ready to draw and quarter me by now.” “I’m a grown woman. They have no say in this.” She put her arms around his neck, pulled his head down to hers and kissed him.

He kissed her as if he had all day, as if kissing her was his sole focus. Glenna put her arms around his neck, wishing they weren’t in the car so that she could get closer to him. Finally, Mitch broke the kiss and dropped his hands, moving away from her at the same time. As first kisses went, it was a doozy.

He turned his head to look at her and their eyes met. They locked gazes for a long, long moment. His mouth was close, and very tempting. His gaze fastened on her lips. Flicked back to her eyes, and then to her mouth again. If he kissed her would his kiss be gentle or rough? Leisurely or urgent? What if she kissed him? Would he pull back? Or move closer? They both looked away.

You’re going to call your partner and tell him you need help and he needs to come up here.” “Why should I?” he asked. Glenna walked over and casually pointed the gun at him. “Because if you don’t I’ll shoot you,” she said in Spanish. She held the muzzle against his knee. “Right here. I understand being shot in the kneecap is painful. Very painful.”

Hell, he hated women crying. Nothing made him feel more uncomfortable. He didn’t know how to comfort her so he did the only thing he could think of. He put his arm around her and hugged her. Comfort her, right. He didn’t even know why she was crying. She turned in to him, buried her head in his chest and sobbed. Oh, fu#$. What do I do now?

If she’d had the money she’d supposedly embezzled, she sure as hell wouldn’t stay in a place like this. No, if the Villareals wanted her, and he had to think they did, then they wanted her for another reason. But what? Glenna didn’t know. Hell, she didn’t know her name, much less why she was hiding from the Villareals. Or, as unlikely as it seemed, hiding from someone else.

She sat at a small table in an outdoor café in Valparaiso, Chile, a battered backpack at her feet. She looked as lost and alone as anyone he’d ever seen. Mitch Hardeman walked up to her table and said, “You are a damned hard woman to find.”
