oh, and where was Owen's family when Owen's wife died and he couldn't cope? This makes no sense!

The "not knowing" makes even less sense now. Owens family thought of Jude as their "son"? And the mother owns the pharmacy / grocery store? Has he not been in that shop for 8 years? How could he not have known about Owen having a kid or his wife dying? Has Owen not talked to his "supposedly" loving mother for 8 years? How could he not know about Jude's parents dying?

I need a prologue, why did they lose touch after being best friends forever? If you are supposedly best friends, and one of you never left the small town you grew up in, how could you not know about parents and spouses dying or the birth of a child?

I’m curious if this author is British. Story is set in America, but the laws would never be like what is being described and some terminology is clearly British. If a story is set in America, use American terms.

Hoo boy! 18 pages in and every time one character asks about a family member the answer is that they’re dead. Then one MC asks the other MC how he’s doing and he says he’s dying. Enough with the dead already! It’s only the first chapter! Plus, it could be stated a little more tactfully. “He/she passed away” is a less brutal answer.
