Status Updates From Rally Cry (Lost Regiment #1)

Just started this one:
a Union regiment from Maine boards a transport ship and is suddenly hurled through space and time, shipwrecked on an alien world. Armed with Civil War weapons and ideas of freedom, equality, and democracy, they enter a society shaped by brutal hierarchies. Curious to see where this goes.

third (or fourth? can't remember) time reading this and starting this series, I made it to book 4 once, and I really do want to finish it (by which I mean books 1-8, book 9 was an abortive attempt to start a sequel series apparently best forgotten, so I'll just ignore that), maybe this is the time.
