The implication that Edward fell in love and had an affair with Jenny felt more subtle in the movie.

“Men were torn in this way; they had to be two people, one at home and another away, while a mother had to be but one.”
As a mom, wholly disagree. But I have to remember not all authors are female lol. Additionally, this was originally published in 1997. There will be cultural and perspective differences. Still, the overall tone has been like this. It makes it harder to fully connect to it.

The take 2 is interesting…slightly similar to the first one. Can’t tell if this is a version of what happened or if it’s a different visit from the doctor.
Took a look at the Table of Contents and it looks like there are 4 total takes. So I wonder if they just get more and more emotionally painful? Or if it is the son changing the story as he takes on his dad’s role of wild tales.

This town where no one leaves is far more spooky than in the movie. I’d even say it is vaguely horrifying if you tilt your head. But I suppose in real life those who fail or perceive themselves as failed go out of their way to hobble you as well.

Loved the movie and always wanted to give the book a try. Seems relatively short so why not.
