After being ruled by the Mughals, the Sikhs and eventually the British, Kashmir finally comes under the Dogra dynasty. This era was beginning of the covet transfer of power from Dogra to Britishers.

Political economy and welfare of the people is heavly dependent on the Kings law and it's implementation.

Coercive political institutions led to the higher taxation of the Kashmiri public under the Dogra regime. Dogra kingdom professed loyalty to the Britishers during the 1857 revolt and the rise of the British era in India is inseparable from such Kingdoms. One is not possible without the other.

One cannot talk about war and governance during mediaeval age in Kashmir without talking about markets. People suffered and, "subedaars" prospered. In the absence of political order and frequent leadership changes, there was plunder, rape, and violence; the era can be defined as an endless "war of all against all" (bellum omnium contra omnes).

Powerful people have always used either religion or nationalism for financial gain. Kashmir rule was no exception under Afghan and Mughal rule.

The author showed that Sufi saints in Kashmir were profoundly versed in religion, but can't be credited with secular credentials despite of massive following among both Hindus and Muslims. Islamic rulers like their predecessor Hindu rulers were decadent, & destructive, as well as few among them respected the religious plurality of Kashmir.

Kashmir is a Russian doll of a story. It’s a story of stories, each describing what is or ought to be, none entirely. And, it is our inability to take the time to understand the multi-layered and complex history of a region...
