I sympathize with Mareleau's backstory, but she is spoiled and whinny inside. Actually, everyone younger person except Cora is whinny in this series

So Lela is old-fashioned in many things, but they already know alcohol is bad for the baby.
I may be wrong, but as far as I know, that only became a regular practice for pregnant people in the 20th century.
