The First Day can only be seen as a disaster for the Union. With the death of Reynolds the army never had a coherent plan. Howard and Doubleday made many mistakes, which only made the defeat worse. Only Howard leaving troops on Cemetery Hill, and the ineffective attacks by Hill and Ewell saved the Union army today.
