I wonder why I read this first today. Masterpiece.

How the development of an animal trait like vision or sociability is in principle genetic but the development process (of vision) requires activation by the environment. If the activation by the environment is missing during e.g. human childhood or is abnormal (very different from the evolutionary ancestral environment) the development can be severely deterred.
