Struggling to comprehend the location of the book...references made in the first couple of pages have thrown me off. Is it in the US, is it in the UK, is it set in Australia? The reference to football is minor and probably not even important to the story, but if you are going to do it use the right terms...Even this minor issue is causing me to struggle to get into the story.
