Westall seems to have been fascinated with history and the question of how to preserve pieces of the past. It shows up as a theme in several of his books. Here, it extends to people as well as places, because both Arthur and Prudie deserve better.

Also, Anne bonding with Arthur is one of the loveliest things about the book.

Rereading this for the first time in decades. I'd forgotten how awful Anne's mother is!
