I could not finish this book. It would take me another 500 pages to finish (having read over 500 already). It was a book for a Biblical Counseling class and the professor had us read only some parts of it. A very helpful book on being able to set up a Biblical framework in the counseling process. I give 4 stars to the 53% of the book that I did read. :)

Like the flashing light on the dashboard of an automobile, the light itself is not the problem. What is under the hood is the problem. So it is with apparently uncaused fear or anxiety (the fear of judgement)... The fear itself is not his root problem. The sin which generates this fear is his problem. -544

If one says that he "feels bad," he may mean that he is experiencing common sorrow or physical pain. But if he says that he "feels bad ABOUT HIMSELF" (a phrase commonly used by human wisdom), he usually is experiencing "conscience sorrow," due to the sin which he knows he is entertaining in his heart. -402

A careful study of the word of God reveals that the human emotions may be categorized into three basic areas: physiological emotions, attitude emotions, and conscience-stimulated emotions. -396

After all, in his immaterial heart the believer is 'strengthened with power through the Holy Spirit in the inner man' (Eph 3:16), and his 'inner man is being renewed day by day.'" -293

Even the conscientious unbeliever has only a humanly good conscious, not a good conscience before God. On the other hand, when a person trusts in the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of his sins, his conscience is cleansed, as he becomes positionally (in God's eyes in the law courts of heaven) righteous and clean before him. -204

This lack of shame in the presence of the holy God is strong evidence that even before they sinned Adam and Eve had in their natures consciences that were operating - judging them righteous before God and granting them peace in light of both the general standard of love for God in their hearts and the specific standard of the command He had given to Adam. -128

As one grows in Christ, though he sins less and less, he is more and more sensitive to sin. -115

Man's material brain is used in making his responsible choices, but Scripture makes it abundantly clear that these choices are determined solely by his immaterial being. That is why he is responsible to God for them - because they are not determined by his physiology but by the immaterial aspect of his nature which enables him to know about God, to know Him personally, and to do as He desires or to disobey Him. -40
