32-33 “Jump / Rope” - very sad

A cakewalk was a dance that enslaved Black people would do, imitating fancy white folk dancing, in order to get a cake as a prize from the “master” (see also: “that takes the cake”)

Offal- waste/ trimmings (butcher stuff was just mentioned, so probably animal remains)

“Holding hands would mean exposure and that would be the end, but each was able to lay a heavy, guarded, enshrouded palm on the shoulder of the next.”
