I read the first short story included in this volume, “Pikku herra Friedemann” (Little Herr Friedemann, 1897). I enjoyed it, though it shows that at 22 years old, Mann had not yet matured as a writer. But the theme of all-encompassing, desperate desire for something you can't reach resonates deeply with me.
