I read the first intro page after the TOC and love it:
“You are about to read the story of the world you live in. It is a story that stretches back over five thousand years. While you read, you must not lose yourself. In fact, there is only one proper reason to learn history: to improve your life, here and now.”
There’s a form you fill out that has you place name, location, year. Pretty fun.
